LEVEL 04 · LESSON 33
Human-in-the-loop
Human oversight works when the human can understand and change the decision.
What it is
Human-in-the-loop means a person participates at a defined point in an AI-assisted process to review, correct, approve, or resolve uncertainty.
Why it matters
Human oversight is useful only if the reviewer has the evidence, time, and authority to make a meaningful decision.
A business example
An assistant drafts a response and proposes a refund. The reviewer sees the original complaint, order history, applicable policy, and exact proposed amount before approving or editing it.
How it actually works
Choose review points based on impact and uncertainty, not just habit. Present a concise action summary with supporting evidence and clear options. Define who owns the decision, how long review can wait, and what happens if it is rejected or unanswered. Measure reviewer corrections and workload. A queue that overwhelms people can turn thoughtful oversight into automatic approval.
A common misconception
Putting a person somewhere in the process does not guarantee safety. A reviewer who cannot inspect the relevant facts may only add delay.
ONE SENTENCE TO REMEMBER
Human oversight works when the human can understand and change the decision.
CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Reviewers approve 99% of an assistant’s refund proposals within seconds, often without opening the evidence. What does this suggest?
Show the answer
Answer: C.
Human oversight works when the human can understand and change the decision. Putting a person in the process does not guarantee safety, and an overwhelming queue can turn oversight into automatic approval. Measure corrections and workload.
Take it into your next meeting
What would a reviewer need to reject a plausible but wrong recommendation?
