Observability

Observability shows whether the system works and helps explain why it does not.

What it is

Observability is the ability to understand a system’s behavior from signals such as logs, metrics, traces, and user feedback.

Why it matters

An AI product can look healthy technically while giving poor answers. You need visibility into both service operation and task outcomes.

A business example

A helpdesk assistant’s response time is normal, but escalations increase after a policy update. Outcome metrics and retrieval logs reveal that the new policy was never indexed.

How it actually works

Track operational measures such as failures and latency alongside quality measures such as unsupported claims, correction rates, and task completion. Segment by task type and version to find hidden regressions. Connect alerts to an owner and a response plan. Log only what is needed, with access controls and retention limits, because prompts and tool results may contain sensitive information.

A common misconception

Collecting every prompt is not the same as understanding system quality. More data without useful questions can add cost and exposure without insight.

ONE SENTENCE TO REMEMBER

Observability shows whether the system works and helps explain why it does not.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

A team logs every prompt and response but still cannot tell whether answer quality dropped after an update. What is missing?

Show the answer

Answer: D.

Observability shows whether the system works and helps explain why it does not. Collecting every prompt is not understanding; track quality signals alongside operational ones, segment by version, and log only what is needed.

Take it into your next meeting

Which signal would reveal a quiet quality decline before customers complain?

One more concept, understood.
