Local models

Running locally gives you more control and more responsibility.

What it is

A local model runs on hardware you operate, such as a laptop, workstation, or private server, rather than sending inference requests to an external model service.

Why it matters

Local execution can improve control over data paths and availability, but shifts hardware, maintenance, and security responsibilities to your team.

A business example

A research group runs a model on an internal server for sensitive working drafts. It also controls document retrieval, logging, backups, and network access so the overall workflow matches its requirements.

How it actually works

Choose a model compatible with available memory and compute. Plan how requests reach it, how updates are approved, and how quality is measured. Reducing numerical precision can lower memory needs, with possible quality tradeoffs. Check the complete system for external calls; a local model can still be connected to cloud tools or telemetry. Compare total operating effort with a managed alternative.

A common misconception

Local does not automatically mean secure, free, offline, or sufficiently capable. Those properties need separate verification.

ONE SENTENCE TO REMEMBER

Running locally gives you more control and more responsibility.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

A company moves an assistant to a model on its own server, expecting it to be secure and free to run. What still needs checking?

Show the answer

Answer: C.

Running locally gives you more control and more responsibility. Local does not automatically mean secure, free, offline, or capable; a local model can still connect to cloud tools or telemetry, and operating effort must be compared with a managed option.

Take it into your next meeting

Who would own model updates, access control, and incident response for a local deployment?

One more concept, understood.
